Nossa Senhora da Conceição
In the courts held in Lisbon in 1646, King John IV declared that he took Our Lady of the Conception as patroness of the Kingdom of Portugal, promising her, in his name and that of his successors, the annual tribute of 50 gold crosses.
The same sovereign ordered the students at the University of Coimbra, before taking any degree, to swear to defend the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God.
