The giant sable antelope is the national symbol of Angola. Symbolizing vivacity, velocity, beauty and visual sharpness in African mythology. His portrait can be found can be found on stamps, banknotes and passports of the nation. Even Angola national football team is known as the Palancas Negras, Portuguese for sable antelope, in honor of this antelope. In the late 80’s scientists were very concerned about this giant antelope, a protected species since 1933. Surviving civil war, they were just sighted again in January 2004, because of a group from Centro de Estudos e Investigação Cientifica of the Catholic University of Angola, led by Pedro Vaz Pinto.
